UPDATE: Police on watch as Phillipsburg schools let out
One victim is being treated for injuries after a shooting Friday morning in Phillipsburg.
The person is being treated at Easton Hospital, Warren County Prosecutor Richard Burke confirmed early Friday afternoon. The nature and severity of the victim's wounds were not immediately clear.
Gunshots were reported about 8:15 a.m. in the first block of Rose Street in Phillipsburg, near the entrance to the Route 22 toll bridge.
Burke said the investigation is in its early stages and that police are looking for several people who may have been involved. Emergency dispatches indicated four men ran off after the shooting.
Blood was visible on the sidewalk along Rose Street, near North Third Street, and a blue sedan appeared to have a bullet hole on the driver's side of the windshield.
Phillipsburg High School and alternative school were under orders to shelter in place Friday morning as the investigation continued nearby.
Officers searched for evidence in lawns and on cars on Rose Street and a New Jersey State Police helicopter flew over the area. Police and a K-9 also searched an apartment building at 1 Memorial Parkway, about a block from the shooting scene. It's the same building where in October 2014 alleged Wilson Borough double-shooter Tchella Bellamy was arrested.
Easton police Capt. Scott Casterline said Friday morning his department was notified by Easton Hospital that a gunshot victim had arrived there, assuming the shooting had happened in the city. An Easton detective briefly visited the Phillipsburg scene.
