Five local wrestlers advanced to the quarterfinals of the NJSIAA wrestling championships Friday night at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City.

Phillipsburg’s trio of Kyle Markus (113 pounds), Brandon Paetzell (132) and Robert Melise (220), plus North Hunterdon’s Derek Ciavarro (160) and Voorhees’ Kyle DiNapoli (126) will compete in the “round of 8” that starts at 10 a.m. Saturday.

The semifinals are set for 5 p.m. Saturday with Sunday’s medal round at 10 a.m. and finals at 3 p.m.

Paetzell is seeking his third state medal; he was runner-up as a sophomore in 2014.

Melise, fifth last year, and DiNapoli, eighth last March, look for their second.

11 area wrestlers will be in Saturday’s wrestlebacks and are all still alive for a medal. Here’s the list.

Phillipsburg: Brian Meyer (145), DJ Wissing (152), Kyle “Nacho” Nothnagel (285)

Delaware Valley: AJ DeRosa (113), Matt Kolonia (132), Connor Mills (138), Kyle Lightner (182), Kyle Schlittler (195).

Hackettstown: Alex Carida (132)

North Warren: Anthony Duardo (152)

Warren Hills: Cody Harrison (106).

If Duardo reaches the medal stand he would be the Patriots’ fourth state medalist.
