Warren Hills basketball falls to Teaneck in state semifinal

Teaneck 48, Warren Hills 36  -- Rapid recap


The Warren Hills Regional High School boys basketball team lost to Teaneck 48-36 Thursday night in an NJSIAA Group 3 semifinal at East Orange High School.


Turning point: With Warren Hills trailing 5-4, Teaneck went on a 15-0 run to take a commanding 20-4 lead with 7:12 left in the first half. The Blue Streaks faced an uphill battle the rest of the game.


Top performers: Senior forward Nick Whitaker registered game-highs of 17 points and 10 rebounds for Teaneck (26-4). Junior forward Jawaun Daniels added 14 points and sophomore point guard Ja'Quaye James contributed eight points and a game-high nine assists.


Senior forward Anthony Veneziano scored 13 points to lead Warren Hills (21-7).


What it means: Warren Hills, the North 2 Group 3 champion, saw perhaps its greatest season ever come to an end against a superior opponent. Along the way the Blue Streaks captured their first sectional title and boasted two 1,000-point scorers in Veneziano and Johnny Bamford.


Teaneck, which won the North 1 Group 3 title, plays Winslow for the state title at 2 p.m. Saturday at Rutgers University.
