The Newark man was pulled over by New Jersey State Police near the Pennsylvania border.
A Newark man was high on heroin while driving on Interstate 80 with an 11-year-old boy in the car, New Jersey State Police allege.
Carmelo Rodriguez Jr., 36, was not staying in his lane when he was stopped by authorities shortly before 7 p.m. Sunday on the highway in Hardwick Township, heading west near the Pennsylvania line, according to state police and a criminal complaint filed in Warren County court.
Rodriguez allegedly appeared disoriented -- state police said he was under the influence of heroin.
In addition to the drug, authorities also allegedly found 20 pills of escitalopram and 11 pills of trazodone -- medications used to treat depression and anxiety -- both prescribed to different people.
Patrols increasing for Easter weekend
Rodriguez is charged with three counts possession of a controlled dangerous substance, and one count each of child abuse, being under the influence of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.
He was sent to the Warren County jail in lieu of $5,000 bail.
