Tearful students, parents and coaches huddled at Warren Hills Regional High School's football field Saturday to mourn the death of quarterback Evan Murray.

The senior, a three-sport athlete, died after being injured in a varsity football game Friday night at the Blue Streaks' stadium in Washington Township, Warren County.

Following a memorial for students and staff, district interim Superintendent Gary Bowen issued a brief statement to media.

"I offer my sincere condolences to the Murray family and Warren Hills Regional School District," Bowen said. "The greater Warren Hills community is a close-knit group of fine people, and I thank everyone for their support. I am extremely proud of the students, staff and public officials who came to our stadium this morning to assemble."

The superintendent said the school will be open Saturday and after 9 a.m. Sunday for grief counseling.

Bowen declined to take questions, saying he had no more information about Murray's injury. Officials did not say how he was hurt.

Murray was taken by ambulance to Morristown Medical Center, where he was treated and died, a spokeswoman said. An autopsy is set for Saturday afternoon, said Warren County Prosecutor Richard Burke.

People outside the Murrays' home, which had "Go Streaks" signs planted at the end of the driveway, said the family was not willing to talk Saturday.

People at the school in the morning said they were shocked by Murray's death.

"No words. It's devastating," said one parent.

"I can't comprehend what happened," said another.

A GoFundMe account has been established to raise money for Murray's family.
