Lee K. Capers, of the 300 block of Heckman Street, was indicted this week on charges from the January stabbing, including attempted murder and child endangerment.

Capers allegedly fled the home after 30-year-old Carmen Figueroa was stabbed about 7 a.m. Jan. 14. She suffered at least two stab wounds, one to the back and one to the chest, authorities said at the time.

The indictment says she was repeatedly cut, stabbed and slashed, and that it occurred in the presence of a child for whom Capers had a legal responsibility.

Phillipsburg police Chief James Faulborn said officers found Capers' vehicle about 20 minutes later, and a Washington Township police K-9 found a knife in a ditch.

Capers was found and arrested about an hour and a half after the stabbing in Pohatcong Township. The search prompted a "soft lockdown" at some Phillipsburg schools.

This week, a Warren County grand jury indicted Capers on one count of first-degree attempted murder; second-degree charges of aggravated assault and endangering the welfare of a child; and third- and fourth-degree weapons charges.

The indictment also says Capers had previously been convicted of aggravated assault in Middlesex County.

After his arrest, Capers was sent to the Warren County jail in lieu of $150,000 bail, where he remains incarcerated.
