It's the first new medical and surgical unit in 30 years at the hospital, officials say.

A new $5 million, 24-bed expansion at St. Luke's Warren County campus is the first of its kind in 30 years at the Phillipsburg facility, according to officials announcing its unveiling.

The medical and surgical unit which opened Wednesday includes rooms specialized for orthopedic surgery, bariatric and pediatric patients, the hospital announced in a news release.

Officials also say that the new units offer privacy, space and allow patients' families to be closer and more involved.

"We know that family and friends have a huge impact on our patients' well-being and our (new) unit has been designed for their comfort as well," campus President Scott R. Wolfe said in the news release.

The new rooms are part of a larger $108 million effort by St. Luke's University Health Network to expand and renovate the hospital and outpatient facilities in Warren County, the release said.

In October, the hospital dedicated a $10 million intensive care unit to the parents of Phillispburg native Michael Perrucci, an attorney whose law firm and real estate company are major forces in the Lehigh Valley.
