The Bloomsbury man allegedly had decals for both New Jersey and Pennsylvania State Police.

A man allegedly pretending to be a New Jersey State trooper faces charges after trying to pull over a real, off-duty trooper Thursday on Interstate 78 in Warren County.

State police -- in a Facebook post using the hashtags #shenanigans and #tomfoolery -- said 25-year-old Zachary Schmidt, of Bloomsbury, attempted the illegal stop just before 10 p.m. in Pohatcong Township.

"For reasons only God and Mr. Schmidt know," the post says, Schmidt used blue emergency lights and showed a placard with a state police decal.

The real trooper reported the vehicle to dispatchers, state police say. Schmidt's placard allegedly also had a Pennsylvania State Police decal on the other side.

Schmidt is charged with impersonating a public servant and was released pending a court date. A message left at Schmidt's home was not immediately returned.

State police concluded the Facebook post: "The moral of the story is don't try to stop cars if you're not a cop, and don't stop for white, Jeep Grand Cherokees. Call 911 instead."
