The Centenary University President's House will host campus and community functions.

The past home of Centenary University's presidents will be rebuilt as a new leader steps in at the Hackettstown institution.

The century-old President's House was ravaged by fire in January 2015 and demolished that spring.

The home -- built in Morristown and later shipped by rail to Hackettstown -- housed five college presidents since 1945, though it had more recently been used not as a residence but for meetings such as alumni gatherings.

After it is rebuilt over the next year, it will once again host campus and community functions -- part of new president David Haney's goal to boost Centenary's outreach to residents, according to a university news release.

Haney takes over as the head of the Hackettstown institution Friday.

He was named as Centenary's 13th president in February and succeeds Barbara-Jayne Lewthwaite, who announced a year ago that she would be stepping down to join the university faculty.

The new president is coming from Virginia, where he was the vice president of academic affairs at Emory & Henry College.

Haney and his wife, Lisa Baldwin, will be out in the community themselves. Baldwin will begin teaching second grade in town next fall, according to a university news release. Also an acoustic folk duo, the couple is planning a public meet-and-greet in September where they will perform.
