The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee polled the district.
A poll conducted for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee and obtained by The Auditor has challenger Josh Gottheimer within two percentage points of incumbent Republican Rep. Scott Garrett.
Garrett (R-5th Dist.) is the only New Jersey representative on the DCCC's target list and the only federal lawmaker in the state considered vulnerable in November.
The DCCC poll put Garrett ahead, 44 percent to 42 percent, with 14 percent undecided. That difference is well within the survey's margin of error of 4.3 percentage points.
The Democratic analysis said that the undecided voters prefer Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton over Republican Donald Trump by eight percentage points, giving Gottheimer room to pick up the support he needs.
The DCCC has run ads tying Garrett and other House Republicans to Trump, who iw viewed negatively in opinion polls, while Garrett has attempted to link Gottheimer to Clinton, who surveys say is unpopular as well.
Both Gottheimer, a former White House speechwriter, and Garrett have banked millions of dollars for their campaigns, threatening to make the 5th District race one of the most expensive in the country.
While party-funded polls can be suspect, surveys showing the candidates running so close together can be used to raise money and highlight the race as one deserving of attention.
This poll surveyed 508 voters in the 5th District on Aug. 2 after both parties' national conventions.
