UPDATE: Car cutting off school bus caused fatal crash, prosecutor says

The victim of a deadly accident Friday with a Phillipsburg school bus was an 85-year-old woman from the Jersey Shore, authorities said.

The bus was bringing home Phillipsburg High School students to Greenwich Township about 2:35 p.m. when it crashed with a car driven by Betty Lou Marchant, of Avalon in Cape May County, according to a news release from Greenwich Township police.

The crash occurred on Route 173 at the Interstate 78 eastbound off-ramp in Greenwich. The road was closed in both directions as authorities investigated.

Marchant was pronounced dead at the scene. Several students and the bus driver were taken to St. Luke's Hospital in Phillipsburg for injuries reported to be minor.

The bus belongs to Dalrymple Transportation, police said. Phillipsburg Superintendent George Chando said the bus was contracted by Greenwich schools.

Greenwich police and the Warren County Prosecutor's Office are investigating. Several local police departments and emergency squads assisted at the scene.
