The Delaware River Joint Toll Bridge Commission did, however, approve other toll changes.
Drivers of pickup trucks with four rear wheels -- dualies -- will continue paying the same tolls as other passenger vehicles on Delaware River crossings.
The Delaware River Joint Toll Bridge Commission on Monday approved several toll changes but rejected the proposal to boost the rate for dualies by 550 percent, from $1 to $6.50.
The commission defines dualies as two-axle vehicles shorter than 8 feet tall with more than four tires. The idea was to reclassify these dual-wheel, rear-axle pickup truck as a Class 2/light truck, already subject to a $6.50 toll, instead of Class 1/passenger vehicle.
"Commissioners said they were persuaded to bypass the proposed dually/dualie change based on public input they received during a toll hearing/public comment process conducted during the past three months," a commission news release states.
Hearing passes quietly for 550 percent toll hike
Among the rate hikes that gained commission approval are a rise in cash tolls on RVs towing a trailer or vehicle, going to $12 for three axles, $16 for four axles and $20 for five axles. The change addresses disparate rates between cash and E-ZPass transactions for instances when an RV has either a trailer or vehicle in tow.
Commissioners also approved new tolls for the new Scudder Falls (Interstate 95) bridge. The crossing had been a toll-supported, or free, bridge. The tolls will apply to southbound vehicles, entering Pennsylvania, beginning when the first span of the new bridge opens to traffic in 2019.
Collected entirely electronically, the I-95 bridge tolls will be paid by E-ZPass or by bills mailed to the addresses of non-E-ZPass motorists, via their license plate captured on cameras.
E-ZPass users will see a sharp discount, such as $1.25 per non-discounted crossing versus a $2.60 toll-by-plate charge for passenger vehicles that are less than 8 feet high and have up to two axles and four or fewer wheels. Toll-by-plate is higher to account for processing costs.
A 40 percent discount will be available to motorists who make at least 16 crossings at any commission toll bridge per month and who use an E-ZPass issued by a New Jersey E-ZPass Group member. The group includes the toll bridge commission, DRPA, DRBA, NJTA, SJTA and BCBC.
