Built in 1826, the facade was overdue for a fresh coat.
The old courthouse should soon look like new.
A tarp on Thursday covered the front of the Warren County Court House in Belvidere as workers behind it refreshed a weathered facade long overdue for a fresh coat of paint.
At the edge of previously completed work, gleaming new white framing the brick walls contrasted with the aged, cracked and dirty exterior of the structure built 190 years ago.
The project has been underway for a few weeks now and will likely last a few more, workers there say.
Court's long-overdue facelift approved
Freeholders in August approved a $344,000 contract for repainting, a process the county has said was held up at least a year by a state historic commission that was concerned about retaining the building's original materials.
This year's $102.6 million county budget set aside $2 million specifically for courthouse renovations. The windows and boilers have previously been replaced. The county and state also agreed last year to split the costs of rearranging a courtroom that was deemed unconstitutional after a renovation.
The adjacent Courthouse Annex, which houses the Warren County Prosecutor's Office, was finished last year after a $4.3 million refitting.
