The road game versus Mount Olive follows the postponement of a home game last month due to the illness.

Hackettstown High School postponed Friday night's varsity football game at Mount Olive High School after one its players was diagnosed with hand, foot and mouth disease, WRNJ radio reports.

The game is moved to 7 p.m. Monday at Mount Olive in Morris County. Friday afternoon's Hackettstown High freshman football game is canceled, as is Monday afternoon's JV game.

Hackettstown previously postponed the Tigers' Sept. 16 home game versus Wallkill Valley due to an infection with the virus affecting the opposing team.

Now, Hackettstown is the latest school to experience the illness, mostly commonly caused by strains of coxsackievirus and enterovirus, according to information on the Hackettstown School District website from the New Jersey Department of Health.

"Symptoms of HFMD often include fever, reduced appetite, sore throat, a feeling of being unwell, painful sores in the mouth that usually begin as flat red spots," the information sheet says. "A rash of flat red spots that may blister on the palms of the hands, soles of the feet, and sometimes the knees, elbows, buttocks and/or genital area."

Some people who are infected may show no symptoms, but are still contagious.

Treatment involves over-the-counter medication to manage symptoms and drinking plenty of fluids to combat dehydration.

Hand, foot and mouth has also affected students at Hunterdon Central High School, among a number of schools in New Jersey, nj.com has reported.

WRNJ carries Hackettstown football games.
