How does the Belvidere library's fate impact you? Meeting will discuss it

The impact of a Nov. 8 referendum is the subject of a planned town hall meeting.

Next month, voters will decide if the Belvidere Free Public Library's story comes to a close.

The town council has scheduled a meeting Thursday evening to discuss exactly what the referendum means, including tax impacts. The question will appear before town voters on the Nov. 8 general election ballot.

Mayor Joseph Kennedy has said the town must decide where it wants to spend its money. A breakdown by resident on the town's website shows that a move to the county library system would raise taxes for most by less than $100.

The library at 301 Second St., which was established by public referendum, dates back to 1937. It operates on a thin budget, is open mostly afternoons and evenings, and boasts more than 2,500 members, according to its website, which encourages residents to vote "no" on the referendum. That will preserve the library and keep taxes steady, the library says.

Library's final chapter? Voters will decide

Announcements about the meeting -- scheduled for 7 p.m. at the municipal building, 691 Water St. -- were mailed to residents and posted on the town's website. Questions can be submitted beforehand by emailing the town clerk at clerk@belvidere-nj.org.

"We want to give enough factual information to the public so they can determine how we move forward," Kennedy said.
