More than three years after the killing of the mother of his child, Salim Newton stood in a Warren County courtroom as the trial began to determine if he was responsible for her murder.
Newton, 30, is charged with first-degree murder and related crimes in the Sept. 18, 2013, shooting of 22-year-old Melissa Williams at her home in Spruce Alley in Phillipsburg.
U.S. marshals arrested him in Virginia about a month after the shooting.

The trial is expected to last at least three weeks.
Jury selection began Monday before Superior Court Judge H. Matthew Curry.
Warren County Prosecutor Richard Burke has said the state hopes to have a jury and begin testimony by next week. Newton is represented by public defender Karl Keys.
