More than 500 people lost power when a car hit a utility pole.

A car crashed into a utility pole Saturday morning in Washington, closing Route 57 and knocking out power to more than 500 people.

The New Jersey Department of Transportation's 511nj.org website said the road had been shut down in both directions as of 6:28 a.m. after the pole and wires were knocked down west of North Prospect Street.

JCP&L on its website estimated that between 500 and 1,500 customers were without power, which was estimated to be restored by noon. By 8 a.m., the number of affected customers was down to between 100 and 500.

Earlier on Facebook, Washington Township police had warned drivers to use an alternate route overnight due to road construction farther east at the intersection of Routes 57 and 31, which was scheduled to end at 6:30 a.m. Saturday.
