The issues are not expected to impact trout raised for stocking ahead of the start of fishing season.

The annual open house at Pequest Trout Hatchery in Warren County is on hold until late spring, the New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife said Monday.

It had been set for this weekend at the state facility spanning the border of Liberty and Mansfield townships.

Lingering snow cover forced the postponement to June 3-4.

"Snow left over from the March 14 storm that dumped upwards of two feet in the northwestern part of the state made it impractical for the Division of Fish and Wildlife to set up exhibits and accommodate vendors," the Department of Environmental Protection agency said in a news release.

The open house typically falls around the start of trout fishing. The season opens April 8 in New Jersey.

The snowfall is not expected to impact the annual stocking of streams with trout raised at the hatchery, according to the Division of Fish and Wildlife.

Snow quickly melting, spring has sprung

Pennsylvania's trout season opens Saturday in Lehigh, Northampton and 16 other southeastern counties, followed by an April 15 start in the rest of the state.

Both states offer free-fishing days when a license is not required. New Jersey's fish-for-free days are June 10 and Oct. 21, and Pennsylvania's are May 28 and July 4.

Postponing the Pequest Trout Hatchery open house until June means it coincides with New Jersey's first free-fishing day, as well as we with National Fishing and Boating Week running June 3-11.

The free open house runs 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 3 and 4, a Saturday and Sunday, at the 605 Pequest Road complex.

"The event is geared toward fishing and wildlife enthusiasts and introduces newcomers to outdoor activities," the DEP says in Monday's release. "The open house features numerous environmental and conservation exhibits, an introduction to fishing for kids, historical re-enactors, wildlife artists, wood carvers, and a sportsmen's flea market."
