DUI driver flees hit-and-run, then crashes into trees, cops say

A witness tried to get the drunken driver to stop, but he continued, police said.

A drunken driver struck another car along Route 57 in Washington before drifting into the opposite lane, leaving the highway and crashing into trees, police said.

Charged is Mark Wrubleski, 54, of North Wales, Montgomery County, Pa.

Officers around 7 p.m. Saturday were called to Routes 57 and 31 for a report of a hit-and-run crash in Washington Borough. While en route, Lt. John Kaufmann said officers were being called to a single-vehicle crash into a wooded area in the 500 block of Route 57 west -- near McCullough Road -- in Washington Township.

Wrubleski later was determined to be responsible for both accidents, Kaufmann said.

John Bloodgood, 55, of the Stewartsville section of Greenwich Township, was driving a black Chevy behind Wrubleski, who was driving a Toyota 4Runner, when Bloodgood witnessed the Toyota swerving and Wrubleski "driving erratically," Kaufmann said.

At one point when the cars were stopped in traffic, Bloodgood got out of his Chevy and began knocking on Wrubleski's window to get him to stop driving, but he continued on. A short while later, Wrubleski then struck Bloodgood's Chevy and kept going, according to police.

Wrubleski continued on Route 57 east before swerving into the west lane, leaving the highway and crashing into the trees, police said. Wrubleski was not injured in the accident, Kaufmann said.

Wrubleski is facing a slew of charges, including drunken driving, obstruction of the administration of justice, possession of an open container of alcohol in a vehicle, consumption of alcohol in a motor vehicle, refusal to submit to a breath test, failure to report an accident, leaving the scene of an accident and several traffic offenses.

Police did not provide information about Wrubleski's blood-alcohol content level because he refused to submit a breath test, they said. He was processed and released, pending a court appearance.

Also responding to the calls were the Washington Rescue Squad, Washington Township Fire Department, Washington Borough Fire Department and paramedics from Hunterdon Medical Center in Raritan Township.
