The raid was at 5:45 a.m. at 487 S. Main St. in Phillipsburg.
About 50 federal agents descended on a Phillipsburg home during twilight hours Thursday.
The agents surrounded 487 S. Main St. at 5:45 a.m. Some wore FBI and ATF jackets. One car had a New Jersey Department of Homeland Security placard. It's unclear why agents raided the home.
Agents directed reporters away from the home. One told a photographer that more information would be made available through Phillipsburg police.
About a dozen vehicles remained at the scene with around 20 agents more than an hour after the initial raid.
"We heard an enormous bang," said neighbor Daniel O'Brien, who watched the aftermath in his bathrobe from his third-floor deck.
The door jamb at the front of the home was splintered. A wire securing a gate to the rear alley had been cut.
Another neighbor who declined to be identified said he also heard the bang. He came outside and saw agents with guns drawn and saw one man brought out of the home in handcuffs.
He's lived in the neighborhood for 28 years and said the residents at 487 S. Main St. have been around for six months to a year.
He suspects they're white supremacists based on the black clothes and boots they wear and the way they talk and make hand signals to each other.
"One guy has a tattoo on his head that says 'white power,'" the neighbor said.
O'Brien said a neighbor who went to the gym for an early-morning workout drove home at the start of the raid and was ordered to remain in his car for more than a half hour.
Town police blocked off South Main Street between Abbott and Stockton streets briefly at the start of the raid.
A small child in pajamas was in an SUV parked in the rear of the property. Police escorted her into the home about an hour after the raid.
