The accident happened Saturday evening along Route 517 in Hackettstown.
A Hackettstown woman is in critical condition after being struck by a driver Saturday evening as she lay in the road, police said.
The accident occurred at 10:40 p.m. along Route 517 in the area of Cook Street. Alanna Snyder, 18, of Columbia, was headed south in a 1998 Mercury when the car in front of her swerved into the northbound lane to avoid hitting 51-year-old Bernarda Cruz-Leiva in the street, police said.
Snyder also attempted to swerve the Mercury to avoid hitting Cruz-Leiva, but was unable to avoid striking the woman, police said. It remains unclear why Cruz-Leiva was lying in the road.
Cruz-Leiva was taken to Morristown Medical Center, where she was listed in critical condition Monday. Also assisting at the scene was the Hackettstown Rescue Squad, Hackettstown Fire Deptartment and St. Clare's Medic Unit.
Police continue to investigate the accident. Anyone with information is asked to call the Hackettstown Police Department's Detective Bureau at 908-852-3302.
