The bone is being tested to confirm if it is, in fact, human remains.
Authorities in Warren County made a grisly discovery Sunday: A sneaker containing what appears to be a human bone washed up on the Delaware River shore.
Pohatcong Township police Sgt. Scott Robb said the Morris Tri-County Medical Examiner's Office -- which covers Warren, Sussex and Morris counties -- is testing the bone to confirm if it is indeed human.
The sneaker, a Reebok, was found about 5:30 p.m. Sunday in the 300 block of River Road. No other remains were found in the area.
Once a confirmation comes back on the remains, police will take the next steps as appropriate.
"There's a lot of work to do with it yet," Robb said Monday, after police posted about the finding on Facebook. "God forbid somebody's playing a joke."
The finding follows a weekend search farther south on the river after a teen went missing Friday night while swimming in the Philadelphia area. A fisherman also died earlier this month when his boat capsized off the shores of Salem County.
And in February, part of a decomposed leg washed up on the river's shore in Gloucester County.
