The 16-year-old rode about a half-mile on the stolen bike, according to police.
A 16-year-old Hackettstown boy is facing a theft charge after allegedly stealing a bicycle from the middle school to make it to the high school on time.
The theft happened just before 7:50 a.m. Tuesday at Hackettstown Middle School, 500 Washington St. Police said they received a report of someone stealing a bike from a rack at the middle school.
Police later determined the teen rode the bike more than a half-mile to the high school, 599 Warren St., in an effort to get to class on time.
Police identified the teen and released him to a guardian; the bike was returned to its owner.
The school year is winding down, but police urged students to make proper precautions to get to school on time.
