Warren Hills girls soccer gets assist from football team

Some Warren Hills football players entered the stadium and the atmosphere changed and so did the Blue Streaks' energy level on the field.

The Warren Hills girls soccer team was having trouble getting started on Monday afternoon in its NJSIAA North 2, Group 3 first round game.

Visiting Middletown South was controlling most of the action in the first half and the Blue Streaks needed something to spark them.

Then late in the first half, some Warren Hills football players entered the stadium and the atmosphere changed and so did the Blue Streaks' energy level on the field.

"That's why the last 10 minutes were so strong in the first half because we had everybody here pumping us up and getting us ready. It was very nice of them," senior midfielder Lexi Rettino said.

"The energy in the crowd was really pumping through the veins, getting the adrenaline going," senior forward Katelyn Lauziere said.

Warren Hills entered the field for the second half running through a line of football players as some AC/DC blasted over the speakers.

Although the Blue Streaks football players soon exited, the momentum didn't change for the soccer team.

The hosts tallied three goals in the second half, two from Lauziere and one from Rettino, as Warren Hills posted a 3-0 win to advance to the sectional quarterfinals against No. 2 Somerville, which beat Red Bank Regional 4-0.

And the victory came with an assist from some supportive football players.

"Usually when we're playing, they're practicing. So they were allowed to come over and watch us for a bit," Warren Hills girls soccer coach Jen Cavo said. "It definitely did (help). Having the support here makes a big difference. It was nice. It was really nice."
