The passenger is from Washington, also in Warren County. The wreck happened Thursday, according to New York State Police.
A 27-year-old Phillipsburg man and his passenger died in a car crash Thursday night on a highway in upstate New York, according to New York State Police.
The agency in a news release on Friday identified the driver as Michael J. Lopresti. Police identified his passenger as Cecilia M. Phillips, 23, of Washington.
Neither were wearing their seat belts at the time of the wreck, Trooper Jack L. Keller, a New York State Police spokesman, said.
State police at 11:30 p.m. responded to a call about a wreck in the northbound lanes of Interstate 81 in the town of Parish, which is about 30 miles north of Syracuse.
An investigation revealed the vehicle Lopresti was driving, identified only as a 1994 Ford, veered off the highway "for unknown reasons" and crashed into a tree, police said.
Both Lopresti and Phillips were pronounced dead at the scene.
"The investigation involving the cause of the collision is ongoing," the release states, adding Easton and Phillipsburg police departments are among the agencies assisting in the probe.
Keller said there was nothing to indicate the driver used drugs or alcohol prior to the wreck, but toxicology tests are still pending.
It was not immediately clear how Lopresti and Phillips knew each other or what they were doing in upstate New York.
Family members of both victims declined to speak about their loved ones on Friday afternoon.
