Blairstown 6th-graders leave classroom to learn

Blairstown Elementary School students travel to Stony Acres in East Stroudsburg for a series of exercises in problem solving, cooperation and character building.

Recently, the Blairstown Elementary School sixth-grade class took a trip to Stony Acres in East Stroudsburg, Pa. Students were assigned groups at random to encourage peer interaction that may not typically take place in school.

Upon arrival, each group was escorted to wide open spaces by a member of East Stroudsburg University trained staff to begin a series of introduction exercises. There, students worked together to build trust in order to ensure a sense of safety and a level of comfort to last throughout the day as they participated in team activities and challenges.

For teachers, one of the many highlights of the trip was witnessing a group of students move to a table that was occupied by a single student just so she would not be lonely or feel excluded.

At the end of the day, the Stony Acres experience promoted problem solving, cooperation, and character building, while encouraging positive peer interaction that allowed sixth- grade students to grow with each other, practice appropriate social skills and create memories.

Teachers who participated included Denise Bracuti, Ashley Hineline, Christine Kovacs, Dana Mosca, Karen Pfeiffer, Katelyn Perry and Carissa Peterson.
