Several stations in Phillipsburg and Warren County were below the threshold, but prices aren't nearly as competitive on the Pennsylvania side of the Delaware River.
It's a matter of cents, but it's still a symbolic threshold that when crossed doesn't go unnoticed by many motorists in the region.
Several gas stations in Phillipsburg and Warren County have dropped prices below $2 a gallon in the past week.
As of Wednesday afternoon, gasbuddy.com was reporting that the Delta station on Phillipsburg's Center Street and the nearby Express station on Hudson Street were selling gas at $1.99 per gallon of regular.
The prices were even cheaper further north in Warren County.
The 76 station on Prospect Street in Belvidere was at $1.98, the Delta station on Oxwell Place in Oxford Township was also at $1.98 and the US Gas station on North Bridgeville Road in White Township was at $1.97, according to gasbuddy.com.

As is typically the case, the prices weren't nearly as low on the other side of the Delaware River because Pennsylvania taxes on gas are higher than those in New Jersey.
But there were some deals for bargain hunters in the Lehigh Valley who didn't want to make the trek to the Garden State.
Gasbuddy.com reports that the cheapest price in the Lehigh Valley as of Wednesday afternoon was at the B&B Market on Grape Street in Whitehall Township, which was charging $2.19 a gallon.
The favorable trend could continue well into the month given the bigger picture.
The Associated Press on Monday reported that wholesale gasoline fell 10.3 cents to close at $1.396 a gallon. That will help push retail gasoline prices lower in the coming weeks, the AP says.
