The girl suffered "severe bodily injuries" in 2012 after falling from a pullup bar onto a weight bench, the lawsuit says.
A Phillipsburg High School student is suing the district after she was allegedly hurt during a physical education class in 2012.
Based on the legal complaint and supporting documents, Tabitha Johnson suffered "severe bodily injuries" when, after apparently being asked to do pull-ups, she fell onto a weight bench beneath her.
Named as defendants in the lawsuit -- which was filed this month in state Superior Court in Belvidere -- are the school district, the local school board, the county education department, a gym teacher and the athletic director.
Neither Superintendent George Chando nor Johnson's attorney, Kenneth Harrell, returned calls for comment Friday.
The complaint does not specify what injuries Johnson suffered, but says they are "serious and permanent" and have "substantially affected her bodily functioning."
The lawsuit seeks unspecified compensatory damages and court costs.
