A 23-year-old Massachusetts woman was in critical condition Tuesday afternoon after being thrown from a crashing vehicle on Monday evening on Interstate 78 West in Greenwich Township, according to St. Luke's University Hospital and New Jersey State Police.
Passenger Stefani Plante, of Uxbridge, Mass., remained in the intensive care unit, according to a hospital employee.
Driver Kurtis Murray, 26, of Spencer, Mass., was not badly hurt in the crash near mile marker 5.9, Sgt. Gregory Williams said.
Troopers found marijuana and drug paraphernalia "in plain view," Williams said. Murray and Plante were charged with possession of less than 50 grams of marijuana and possession of paraphernalia, Williams said. They were not kept in custody and they face later court dates, Williams said.
State police at Perryville continue to investigate the crash, Williams said.
Plante was flown to the Fountain Hill hospital after the 6:30 p.m. wreck.
The highway was briefly shut, but by 7:25 p.m., all but the right lane were open.
