Amphibians are on the move in what park officials say is a chance to observe a unique natural occurrence.

Warm weather is drawing out frisky frogs and other amphibians, which means motorists in the national park can expect road closures -- a sure sign spring is nearly here.

Around this time of year, especially when it gets rainy, wood frogs, spotted salamanders, spring peepers and other spring-breeding amphibians will search for prospective mates and for wetland breeding areas, according to a Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area news release.

To protect the animals, the park will shut down River Road several evenings over the next few weeks when forecasts call for evening rain and mild temperature.

The first closure will be Thursday night starting between 4 and 5 p.m. and lasting until about 6:30 a.m., the park service announced.

"Closing the road to vehicles not only protects the amphibians, it also offers a rare opportunity for the public to observe one of the most unique natural occurrences in region," said park Superintendent John J. Donahue.

The park spans 40 miles of the Delaware River between Pennsylvania and northwestern New Jersey.

Visitors can still make their way to the McDade Recreational Trail boardwalk near park headquarters, 1978 River Rd. in Bushkill, Pennsylvania. The park says that is an ideal location for visitors to watch and hear the amphibians making their way to nearby wetlands.

Parking is available at park headquarters. Visitors are encouraged to wear light colored, reflective clothing and to bring a flashlight.

More information on road closures can be found on the park's website and Facebook page.
