Vintage photos offer glimpses of Oxford Furnace, the Morris Canal, old homesteads and a church that's still there.
A repository of photos documenting the nation's historic architecture provides a glimpse into Warren County's past.
There in black and white are visual relics of bygone industry like Oxford Furnace and the Morris Canal, along with old homesteads, hotels and places of worship -- some of which remain, at least in part, to this day.
The Historic American Buildings Survey was launched in the 1930s and its photos are held by the Library of Congress.
Combined with two companion programs, the Historic American Engineering Record and the Historic American Landscapes Survey, there are more than half a million documents catalogued.
Vintage photos of Lehigh Valley landmarks
Many of the Warren County photos are undated, though some were taken in the 1930s and '40s and as late as the '70s.
They capture Oxford Furnace decades before it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1977. They show points along the Morris Canal, including industry at its terminus in Phillipsburg.
Others focus on life in the county's northern area, with farmhouses, schools, hotels and at least one church -- which is still there -- in Hope and what is now Hardwick Township.
