A 53-year-old man died Tuesday morning in an apartment fire in Belvidere, according to the Warren County prosecutor.

The victim was identified as James A. Holland III, whom neighbors said lived in the rear apartment at 312 Water St. and owned several nearby properties.

Prosecutor Richard Burke said the cause of the fire has not yet been determined.

No other injuries were reported.

The two-alarm fire was reported about 7:30 a.m. Tuesday and gutted the rear apartment. The dwelling in the front of the building and the adjoining Chinese Inn restaurant sustained heavy smoke damage, fire officials said.

As firefighters extinguished the last of the blaze Tuesday, residents gathered on Water Street. Some said they had tried to enter the burning structure to get to him.

When a vehicle left the scene presumably taking Holland's body, one neighbor offered a goodbye: "So long, Jimmy."
