Mylestone Equine Rescue, based in Pohatcong Township, N.J. is participating in its fourth annual ASPCA Help a Horse Day at Horsemen's Outlet in Clinton Township, N.J. on Saturday, April 22.
The event will be outdoors if weather permits, indoors if it rains.
Mylestone will be competing against rescues to win up to $25,000 in grant prizes to assist with their efforts to protect horses.
There will be a tack swap from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.; a bake sale, refreshments; a silent auction and a chance to win a $500 gift card.
Anyone who signs the visitors roster can also get a 20% discount off of one item in store only. There will also be a chance to win a $100 or $250 gift card to Horsemen's Outlet.
This nationwide competition is for equine rescues and sanctuaries to raise awareness about the lifesaving work they do year-round to care for at-risk horses in their community who have often been abused or neglected. Horses have been central to the ASPCA's work since its founding 150 years ago, when Henry Bergh stopped a cart driver from beating his horse, resulting in the first successful arrest for the mistreatment of a horse on April 26, 1866.
In 2014 Mylestone won a $10,000 grant.
Last year the funds raised at Help A Horse Day went towards Mylsetone's Equine Relief Fund and they were able to help 13 horses and ponies outside of our rescue horses on the farm.
"In addition, and especially because so many of our horses were once starved, we are promoting Horses Helping Humans as their way of giving back. So this year, Help A Horse Day will also include a food drive for a food pantry very near the farm. When you stop by Help A Horse Day, please bring a can of soup or other non-perishable item to help those with food insecurity," said Mylestone found SusanKelly Thompson.
Those who can't make the event, can still help with a donation marked for Help A Horse Day.
