The town recreation director and a group of students and friends were going to add window chalk to vacant storefronts along Phillipsburg's South Main Street, an effort to spur the imagination ahead of a two-day public workshop that will discuss plans for Union Square in town.
"Since a lot of the buildings downtown look very bleak," she said Thursday, "we assembled a little team to go ... spark some creativity."
The workshop runs 6 to 10 p.m. Friday at SoMa Downtown Grill, 62 South Main St., and continues 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Union Station, according to an announcement from the town.
10 projects happening now in P'burg
The first night is to focus on work already done at Union Square, the junction on the New Jersey side of the Easton-Phillipsburg free bridge. The second day is to be about urban planning, historic preservation and economic development.
Town officials have put an emphasis on Union Square, and have previously polled residents on their desires for the area. Mayor Stephen Ellis has said that plans include a mix of residential and retail uses, as well as riverfront access. Funds from parking meters are planned to help grow businesses.
