The effort took about four hours on a very hot and humid night.
Two Washington homes were damaged by fire late Thursday night and early Friday morning and at least two firefighters were taken to the hospital for treatment, according to a report from the scene.
The blaze was reported at 11:17 p.m. in a double-home at 17 Youmans Ave. in the Warren County borough and spread to the adjoining 17.5 Youmans Ave.
It appeared most of the damage was to the second and third floors, with flames coming through the roof and the third-floor window in the front of the building.
The fire was out and additional work complete by 3:05 a.m.
Due to the high temperatures and humidity outside, and the intense heat from the fire, firefighters were cared for by EMS personnel, getting hydration, a checkup and rest before returning to the effort. Because of conditions, several fire companies and rescue squads were called in.
In addition to township police and borough firefighters, fire departments responded to the call from Washington Township, Franklin Township, Hackettstown, Belvidere, Mountain Lake, Hampton and High Bridge, as well as rescue squads from the borough, Franklin Township, Oxford Township and Hampton. Greenwich filled in for borough emergency medical calls.
