Latest results of the June 6 primary elections in New Jersey's Senate and Assembly districts.

Polls across New Jersey closed at 8 p.m. Tuesday, starting the counting process that will determine the fate of dozens of candidates seeking bids to represent their political parties in November's state Senate and Assembly elections.

Contested Senate elections took place in eight legislative districts: the 12th, 13th, 14th, 17th, 24th, 35th, 37th and 40th.

There were contested Assembly races in 15 legislative districts: the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 6th, 7th, 11th, 12th, 15th, 17th, 22nd, 24th, 26th, 31st, 37th and 40th.

While it's not too common to have competitive primary elections for state legislative nominations, at least two districts have noteworthy battles being waged. Among them are:

  • In the 2nd District, there's a crowded Democratic primary for the two Assembly bids. Incumbent Vince Mazzeo and running mate John Armato have the backing of the local Democratic party. But Atlantic County Freeholder Ernest Coursey, former Atlantic County Surrogate Jim Carney, former Atlantic City Councilman Rizwan Malik and attorney Theresa Watts are also competing for nominations. The 2nd District covers 17 towns and cities in Atlantic County, including Atlantic City.
  • In the 12th District, state Sen. Samuel Thompson is being challenged by GOP rival Art Haney for the Republican nomination. Haney is chairman of the Old Bridge Republican organization and a longtime rival of Thompson. The 12th District covers 14 towns in Burlington, Middlesex, Monmouth and Ocean counties.
  • In the 40th District, three Republicans are battling for their party's nomination to succeed state Sen. Kevin O'Toole, a close ally of Gov. Chris Christie who is departing after two decades of representing the district. The top two candidates -- Passaic County Clerk Kristin Corrado and Bergen County Republican leader Paul DiGaetano -- are waging a fierce battle for the nod. The race includes a third contender, Edward Buttimore, a retired investigator in the state Attorney General's Office. The 40th district includes 15 towns in Bergen, Essex, Morris and Passaic counties.

Here are the unofficial results of all the contested state Senate and Assembly primary elections held across the state on Tuesday, compiled by the Associated Press. (Note: Vote totals are expected to start coming in about 8:15 p.m. and will be updated throughout the night, so refresh your page or return later to see the latest tallies.)
