Route 57 crash prompts elimination of student bus stop

Administrators decided to eliminate the longtime stop at Montana Road in Franklin Township after a crash involving a tanker truck Tuesday.

Parent Chris Dembecki said he's advocated for three years to move a Warren County bus stop from busy Route 57.

On Tuesday, he got his wish.

After a three-vehicle wreck involving a tanker truck that seriously injured an Easton man in Franklin Township, officials of two school districts eliminated the bus stop at Route 57 and Montana Road.

The move came after consultation Tuesday with school bus companies and parents, school officials said.

Dembecki, who lives near where the wreck occurred, said children are put in harm's way by the bus stop at what amounts to a three-point intersection where Route 57, Montana Road and Stewartsville Road converge.

The corridor has only become more dangerous with higher traffic volume and speed, he said.

"When the buses stop there, people will pass the bus on the shoulder. They're in a hurry," said Dembecki, who has a son at Franklin Township Elementary School.

"It's just a bad intersection for a bus. There's a lot of activity -- too much traffic and cars are steaming. It's like having a bus stop in the devil's den."

Dembecki, who lives on Montana Road, said another crash happened there Sept. 8 when a vehicle hit a school bus and didn't stop.

Franklin Township Elementary School Principal Matt Eagleburger said Tuesday morning's crash was a factor in eliminating the bus stop.

"Our goal is always for the safety of the kids," he said. "After this morning, eliminating it was the best option instead of moving it. There was just no good place to move it."

The two elementary school students who use the stop, including Dembecki's son, were given other bus stop options along Stewartsville Road, Eagleburger said.

The bus stop was also used by middle school and high school students. Administrators at Warren Hills Regional School District, which has jurisdiction over those kids, also decided to eliminate the longtime stop.

Interim Superintendent Gary Bowen and Interim Business Administrator Abigail Kutz of the regional district said the ruling came after consulting with other administrators and parents throughout the day.

"The people who make those decisions and manage the bus routes are experts in efficiency and safety matters and helped make the determination," Bowen said.

Bowen and Kutz said they didn't know of any complaints about the bus stop involving middle school or high school parents. Dembecki, the Franklin Township Elementary parent, said he had expressed concerns to elementary school officials previously.

Dembecki said he had instructed children not to wait for the bus along Route 57, instead telling them to wait on a hill off Montana Road about 50 feet from the intersection.

No students were at the stop when Tuesday's crash happened about 7:05 a.m., school officials said.

Dembecki said he was pleased by the decision to eliminate the stop but sorry about the severity of the crash.

"It took three years to get to what we accomplished today," he said.
